The art of method acting is to immerse ones self in a particular "way of being " to portray a specific persona in hopes of reaching an actors personal performance peak. This classic device has been the secret weapon for many notorious actors throughout time. Method acting is far from prejudice, and stretches from the theatre to the theater. Actors known to use this skill are Jim Carey, Robin Williams, Robert De nero, Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, and the list goes on. Other than the fact of its fasinating connection to oscars, it is a serious topic of controversy. Why? you may ask is because it takes a toll on the mind and body and how they interconnect. The psychological aftermath can be devastating due to the personalities and habits one can aquire. In may cases, these actors need to be rehabilitated for months, even years after to reposses sanity. Often times these actors take these personas home and can ruin relationships. The key depends on the charactor they are trying to achieve. Method acting is known to sike the mind into believing that the real lies in the unreal, and that reality is fused with fantasy. This is incredibly detrimental to the pysche. Say for example an actor was to play the role of a person who had been abused, raped, or neglected. They would first do research on the topic, get other opinions and finally completly dip themselves in the pool of that reality and get started months, even years before. This person has now aquired all of the discord and mental and physical unstableness as an actual person experiencing abuse, rape, or neglect. Can you see the correlation? The physical affects are equally as harmful, it drains the body of energy to fulfill this 'outer body experience' and fluctuates weight loss and weight gain. Actor Christian Bale in batman begins, lost one-third of his body weight for the role. Many of the big name actors experienced eating disorders in the after process. Once again, it all depends on the charactor being portrayed, overeating and starvation can also be the reality of trying to control a deformed psyche. When one hears of method acting, it automatically gives an air of glamour and prestige. However, what is behnd closed doors is too much for the mind to comprehend.
